Breath of Fire (Kapalabhati) - Modified
Benefits:
- Increases the flow of oxygen
throughout the body
- Tones abdominal muscles
- Strengthens the diaphragm
- Increases energy
- Improves concentration
Steps:
- Stand with your feet close together
and parallel (not turned out), standing tall, extending your
spine (or sit comfortably with your spine extended and long)
- Gently close your eyes or look down
slightly
- Close your mouth and begin breathing
through your nose
- Take a long slow inhalation, allowing
your belly to gently expand
- After inhaling completely, exhale
vigorously by quickly pulling in your abdominal muscles.
This will cause a short forceful expulsion of air through
the nose.
- Allow air to passively begin to come
back in (for just a second or two), then exhale vigorously
again through your nose
- Continue pumping your abdominal
muscles every two to three seconds to expel air through your
nose
- Repeat 12-15 times
If
you begin to feel light headed, stop and take a few long slow
gentle breaths. When you feel ready to try this breath again do
it at a slower pace (pumping your breath out every 4-5 seconds)
